not a matter of what we eat or drink

“For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭14:17‬ ‭NLT Although the Church teaches us to FAST by abstaining from food and drink then eating non-dairy vegetarian meals, the Church also reminds us that this spiritual discipline of fasting is a means to an end and not the end goal! Our GOAL -as we strengthen our will- is to live “a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” Our goal is to refuse to sin so that we remain united with our Lord and not separated from Him! Our goal through Fasting is to be spiritually revived by staying connected to our God and to correct our ways to make them straight and not crooked! Our goal in Fasting is to submit ourselves in God’s hands and believe that we live not by bread (food) alone -that is our physical life is not the only life we care about- but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God -that is our spiritual life that depends on God and His commandments is more important!

Ask yourself “HOW” are you fasting? Remember that the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink BUT that through Fasting we abide in God through His Holy Spirit and discipline ourselves to LIVE OUT a spiritual manner of life full of goodness, peace and joy! Forgive me O Lord for the times when my fasting was not spiritual, grant me forgiveness and renew your Holy Spirit within me as I continue this Advent Fast striving to live in You!
